This Is The Way It Won't Stay

Frequently, I make the comment at work, "what if I walk outside and get hit by a bus and die?" I don't say this to be morbid or funny (if you're so inclined). I say this because I want my office to be able to operate without me. I want there to be systems in place that ensure I'm easy to replace. Strange as it may sound, our goal is to prepare for my death. In my personal life, it's not too different. My partner and I are as legally bound and protected as we can be in the result of one of our…See More

"Here's Something You Can Do Better"

There are a few things I think I do poorly. For one, I do not do well participating in group sessions at conferences. I do not like the artificial nature of hypothetical situations. I do not learn well from role-playing. I do not like pretending to be someone I am not. I call this interactive-group-phobia.I also do not take very good written notes. Taking a great deal of notes does not help me remember what I need to remember. If it is good information, it will stick in the grey matter. …See More

We The People, They The Fools

This was originally posted on my blog, Welcome To The Occupation on August 10, 2011 On my blog, Welcome To The Occupation, fools are not welcome. Tons of foolish things are said and done by prominent people all over the world all day long. I pay them little mind in my life and on my blog. Because the more attention they get, the more apt they are to repeat their foolishness. Digression Alert: Example of a Fool: In the movie…See More

Where Will It END(A)?

Blame it on the Health Care Reform Bill. Blame it on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". Blame it on the Republicans. Whatever you blame it on, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (commonly known as ENDA) is "dead" according to Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass). According to the Washington Metroweekly, it is "barely breathing."* This is quite the turn around from what I heard throughout 2010 from all of the employment law pundits. "ENDA is going to…See More

Whatever's Written In Your Heart

Imagine you need to make a huge change to your life.Maybe it is starting a family, getting a different job, or moving to another house. Maybe it is quitting your job, leaving everyone you know behind to go camping in Nepal. For each of us, huge is relative.Think for three seconds about this change that you really, really need.Think now that before you are allowed to go forward with this huge change, you need to have six months of psychiatric treatment. After which, you will see a physician…See More

Diversity Is A Word

From the Welcome To The Occupation archives. Originally posted there on May 17, 2010♫Grease is the word, is the word that you heard, It's got groove it's got meaning.♫Catchy, huh? If you know the words, the song is now probably floating through your head. If you’ve heard the song a million times before, there’s a good chance you’re singing the words, without having any knowledge as to what you’re saying, even if you don’t like the song. Words…See More

Gay At Work: When I Think About It

From the Welcome To The Occupation archives. Originally posted there on January 23, 2010Everyday that I go to work, I walk past the receptionist, say hi to co-workers, put my lunch in the refrigerator, sit at my desk, turn my computer on and I start doing what I'm supposed to do so dollars appear in my checking account every two weeks. An exception to this is if maybe I rode my bike into work, I will change clothes first before sitting at my desk. Oh, and I almost always get a cup of coffee.…See More
