Mayor Bloomberg's Diversity Efforts Negligible at the Top

I ran across an interesting article in the New York Times that pointed out Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's diversity vows and his actions therein are not in line.

Bloomberg has made nine new appointments to his administration, and all of them are white. All but one is a man.

"Despite a pledge he made when he took office to make diversity a hallmark of his administration, Mr. Bloomberg has consistently surrounded himself with a predominantly white and male coterie of key policy makers," the article said.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg's diversity vows and diversity practices are not the same, actions speaks louder than words, he can talk the talk, but not walk the walk.
Mayor Bloomberg needs to understand that it is not good enough to have an equal distribution of diversity in city employees. (http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2010/06/29/nyregion/29diversity-g...) He needs to surround himself with differing perspectives so that the impact of potential policy changes can be debated prior to their enactment. Diversity in hiring practices is good policy in business as well as government. It seems that he is looking for “yes men” who will blindly agree with him. The diversity in the top leadership of the largest city in the U.S. should come much closer to the overall population diversity and set the example for the rest of the country. We are not talking about the lack of diversity in the top city employees in Sadorus, IL (pop. 660).
