I read an article from (
www.industryweek.com) March 2010 edition on pre-employment policies, most large Corporations and Manuracturers, adopted over the past 20 years on pre-employment and on the job drug testing. Drug testing advocates contend substance-abuse screening is a cost effective way to reduce on-the-job accidents, improve productitivity and cut absenteeism.
Lewis Maltby, President of National Workrights Institute (
www.workrights.org) says the unine test have many flaws. The job candidates' ability to clean themselves out before hand and the test's inability to detect intoxication on the job. The test results reveals that the employee ingested, some amount of a particular drug at some undetermine point in time.
The prospective candidate who smokes marijuana on Saturday was smart enough to drink beer for two weeks before the drug test, if the Employer opts for the more common urine test.
More Companies/Corporations are looking to hair test as a cheat-proof option. Hair test are effective at detecting repetitive use in employees over a longer time frame, as far back as 90 days.
Qualified expert agree that hair testing is unreliable. The Department of Health and Human Services, which is responsible for the Federal certification program, considers hair testing so unreliable, that employers are prohibited from using it, in Federally funded testing program.
The problem with the hair testing technology, it cannot distinguish between drug by-products inside the hair, which comes from ingestion, or drugs residue on the surface of the hair.
Patrick Forte was an exceptionally diligent, New York City Police Officer. He patrolled stairwells, hallways, and the grounds around city housing projects at night. A dangerous practice that most officers avoided. Patrick Forte's devotion to his duty got him fired.
Patrick Forte patrolled areas where people smoked marijuana and crack, which left residue on his hair, and caused him to test positive for cocaine. He had taken multiple urine tests and past them all. The Police Commissioner's office never doubted or researched that Patrick Forte failed the hair test, because he was exposed to crack fumes in the field. The Police Commissioner's office ordered that Patrick Forte be fired anyway. (
