Solomon P. Lachman

Is Sotomayer the first Hispanic or the second?

The whole notion of 'Hispanic' in the popular consciousness is so recent that Benjamin Cardozo (appointed by Hoover, 1932) is not considered the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice, but is only seen as 'the second Jew.' If Sotomayer is seen as the 'third woman,' perhaps we should add, 'and the SECOND Hispanic'... Why limit Cardozo to only one ethnocultural adjective? What do you think?
